A theater company most terrible is about to stage a murder most foul … no good can come of this. Actually, these wannabe thespians will be lucky to make it through opening night without some real corpses stacking up, because this is The Play That Goes Wrong. And boy, does it. But what’s a chaotic series of mishaps for them makes for “the funniest play Broadway has ever seen” (Huffington Post) and proof that sometimes a show can be so wrong, it’s right. Broadway’s most award-winningest comedy, The Play That Goes Wrong has racked up more laurels than Caesar, conquering stages from Paris to London to Broadway, and now it’s returning to wreak hilarious havoc on New World Stages. See for yourself why Forbes said, “You’ll never have a better time in a theater!”

Before hosting a network late-night show and impressing pop stars like Adele and Bieber with his Carpool Karaoke pipes, James Corden won a Tony for his starring role in Richard Bean’s uproarious comedy One Man, Two Guvnors, a farcical mix of satire, songs, slapstick and well-timed zingers. Now the West End and Broadway hit returns to cinemas to mark National Theatre Live’s 10th birthday. Set in the 1960s, the play follows the easily-confused Francis Henshall, who’s become entangled with working for two local criminals and is desperately trying to keep each of them from finding out that he’s working for the other. Sounds simple, right? Cue the hilarity and try to keep up when One Man, Two Guvnors comes to the big screen at San Jose’s Hammer Theatre Center.
Introducing the new Teatro Latino at Marietta’s New Theatre in the Square! Marietta’s New Theatre in the Square presents In The Heights to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! Over the course of the Tony award-winning musical, In the Heights, we encounter the many colorful residents of Washington Heights — a New York City neighborhood on the brink of change. Usnavi, a first generation Dominican-American corner bodega owner, and his friends and family are dealing with the pressures of rising rents and closing neighborhood businesses. As one family struggles to figure out how to pay for an Ivy League tuition for their brilliant and hard working daughter, a young woman is trying to put a down payment on a new apartment, and Usnavi himself is trying to get back to the Dominican Republic to reconnect with his roots after the death of his parents. In Washington Heights, community is everything, and we see how each of these individuals struggles to survive and how these same individuals come together as a community to mourn their losses and rejoice in their triumphs. Over the course of the show, we see the hard-working residents of Washington Heights grapple with love and lust, identity and racism, all while the prospect of a winning lottery ticket hangs in the air, potentially changing the livelihoods of the people and the community forever. This revolutionary new musical combines Latin rhythms and dance with hip-hop lyrics to tell a captivating story about what it means to chase your dreams as you cling to your roots, and to celebrate the community from which you grew.

Peter Clemenza and Salvatore Tessio are two longtime foot soldiers of the Corleone crime family, but after more than 40 years of service, upper management changes in the organization and a perceived lack of respect from the incoming generation leads them to wonder if they’re being put out to pasture (or under it). But with the handwriting already on the wall, is it possible to change what fate has already decreed? Well, yes; but only if someone is cunning enough to radically change the script. An unauthorized parody of The Godfather (1972), screenplay by Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola, based on the novel by Mario Puzo, Clemenza & Tessio Are Dead takes a look at two little-noticed cogs in the Mafia machine and shows how those wise guys who are often overlooked can actually have the most fascinating stories of all.

Rolling Stone named Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” as their No. 1 song of the entire decade of ‘00-’09, beating out classics like “Hey Ya,” “Crazy in Love,” “99 Problems” and “Rehab.” “Everybody loved this song,” Rolling Stone writes. “From your mom to your ex-girlfriend’s art professor. It blasted in punk clubs and Burger King bathrooms. Every sucky band on earth tried a lame cover. For the summer of 2006, ‘Crazy’ united us all into one nation under a groove.” Be re-united with that singular sound as CeeLo Green and his gorgeous voice light up the stage at one of the Southland’s most respected venues — The Canyon Club in Agoura Hills.

The iconic film Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, starring Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier and Katharine Hepburn, premiered in 1967 — just six months after anti-miscegenation laws were struck down by the Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia. Adapting the piece for the stage in 2013 was a tall order: A lot about modern society had changed, and the film’s mega-stars had long-since passed away. Yet racial tensions continue to divide the country more than 50 years later. Playwright Todd Kreidler was up to the task, though, and managed to bring to the stage a compelling drama that speaks to today’s sensitivities, and even opting for a less certain ending that leaves the door open for conversation around the topic of inter-racial relationships. See Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner through a modern lens at Scottsdale’s Don Bluth Theatre.
